URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. It is the standard way to give the address of any resource on the Internet, most commonly on the world wide web. An example of this is http://www.compustyle.net/about.html. - http is the protocol, www.compustyle.net is the machine name, and about.html is the document.

An IP address is an Internet Protocol Number which a unique number which consists of four parts separated by dots - for example: 207.107.98.104. Every machine on the Internet has a unique IP number. These numbers are converted to a domain name which is essentially a nickname for the address such as "compustyle.net". This is to make it easier for users to remember.

The domain name is the unique name that identifies an Internet site. An Internet address in alphabetic form. Domain names must have at least 2 parts as in "compustyle.net" : the part on the left is the name the organization or party, and the part on the right identifies the highest subdomain (ie. com for commercial, org for organization, edu or education, fr for France, uk for the United Kingdom, etc.) The IP address is translated into the domain name by the domain name server. The domain name www.compustyle.net locates an Internet address for "compustyle.net" with an associated IP address and a particular host server named "www". Your domain name has a limit of 63 characters.

What is a Domain Name Server (DNS?

A DNS is a computer program (machine) on the Internet that translates domain names to IP address numbers to form the internet address for network hosts. Domain Name Service is a protocol that is part of the Internet Protocol Suite, and uses UDP. Another mechanism used to resolve Internet addresses is a Hosts file.

How do I get my domain registered?

First you will need to choose a domain name. Something that reflects the name of your organization or what you would like to call your website. CompuStyle will take care of the rest. We will find out if that domain name is available and submit the registration for you. The domain is registered for yearly increments and then it must be renewed.

Once I get my domain registered will I be able to upload my files to the Internet?

No, this will require your leasing the web space first. Once you have done this you will have a place on the Internet to load it to. As your full service web host and website developer, CompuStyle, can provide these services for you.

Is my Domain Name registration confidential?

No, it is public information. WHO IS databases contain nameserver, registrar, and usually full contact information about each domain name. Each registrar must maintain a WHOIS database for all of the domains they host. The registrar is the "domain name host", not to be confused with "web host". InterNIC maintains a central registry of WHOIS databases. This data base only contains registrar and nameserver information for all .com, .net, and .org domains.

I received an invoice to renew my domain, but it wasn't from CompuStyle. Should I go ahead and renew it?

If this bill is not from CompuStyle it is from another company trying to solicit your business, having obtained your information for the public information database. We would appreciate your disregarding these invoices. CompuStyle will inform you when it is time to renew your domain.

What is a web host?

A Web host provides server space for websites that are operated by companies who do not own their own web servers. This "space" is the area that a website is alloted on the internet.

A web server is a computer that delivers (serves) webpages. When you enter a website address (URL) into a browser program this will send a request to the server for that domain. The server will retrieve the webpage and deliver it to your browser for your viewing.

Yes, a transfer is possible and we are happy to assist. Just be sure not to cancel your account at your former web host until you are certain that the changes have been completely propagated (2 - 3 days).
